The opportunity to fulfill the expectation of these clients was challenging to think outside the box of traditional Colorado style, material choices, design features, strict HOA covenant rules and Boulder county regulations.
The Tuscan architectural elements are reflected in many of the formal hardscape choices. The use of a soft brick in a Herring Bone pattern is consistent with details on the chimney and entry columns. The full range of colors of the Eastern Buff flagstone bandings and coping are of the same origins as the stone on the house. The natural stone also compliment the brick walkways as well as relating to the colorful native granite boulders.
Boxwood hedges create a defined elegant garden courtyard, featuring sculpture in a colorful Knot garden. Unique flowering trees that were chosen for their branching structure as well as for their color, set off the perennial and annual beds. A collection of colorful rustic planters are situated all around the house. The containers plantings follow the seasons with five specific planting schemes which provide interest and beauty all through the year.
The clients wanted a multi use living experience with areas for both formal and casual entertainment. Making the most of the space at the rear of the home, a generous formal main dining area hosts a hybrid Tea rose garden, a wall mounted water fountain and reflection pond, all of which feature Bronze and marble commissioned sculpture. The grade transition to the basement walkout level made for a perfect transition to a naturalistic family living space. The introduction of very large granite boulders outcropping, with xeric plantings were prioritized to present the impression that the home is built right into the mountain side. The more private lower living patio, is set between a large fire pit and water feature, which hosts Koi fish guarded by Heron in the pond. A natural stream running through the patio garden has its source at the grotto where the hot tub is hidden under the falls.
