Residing in their Lafayette golf course community home for several years, the owners of this property felt it was time to leave behind the days of restricting their dining, entertaining, and relaxation experiences solely to the indoors. The homeowners requested the creation of an outdoor living space- a place where they could enjoy the generous Colorado weather and their vast vista views. In an effort to maximize their useable space, a substantial renovation to the existing lawn was set into motion. In order to minimize water consumption, hardscaped areas were maximized while xeric, native Colorado plants were introduced to the existing landscape.
A 650 sq. ft., two-tiered, tumbled paver and stone patio was created at the base of the deck staircase, providing a dynamic environment for outdoor enjoyment. Adjacent to the upper patio is the origin of a meandering, pond-less stream that runs along the patio area and terminates in an underground cistern, minimizing constant maintenance concerns.
Stepping down the staircase to the lower patio, a comfortable sense of enclosure can be felt as a stone seat wall with Arizona Flagstone coping and Granite Boulders wraps around the space. To further integrate the landscape with the look and feel of the house, a complimentary stone was used as a veneer for the pre-existing deck columns, which border the patio space. To the far end of the patio, a stainless steel built-in cooking area was created complete with flagstone and boulder countertops. Flanking the entire patio space is a dense planting bed, overflowing with Colorado native shrubs, groundcovers and perennials that were strategically selected and placed in order to preserve unobstructed panoramic views of the foothills in the distance.
To the homeowners delight, the designed and built landscape far exceeded their initial ideas of what their yard could possibly be transformed into, making this a truly successful landscape renovation project.
