JONES RESIDENCE

2007 Award of Excellence Landscape Maintenance

2004 Grand Award Winner
Use of Color, Annuals

The Jones' desire to create a beautiful mountain property on the flat plains of Boulder County has been an opportunity for Outdoor Craftsmen, LTD. for ongoing project management and maintenance.

The space is an exquisite example of seasonal color transitions throughout the year.  Early spring flowers surrender to a multitude of planted containers and a plethora of colorful summer blooms, leading to stunning fall foliage in the garden beds.

This beautiful home in is a wonderful setting for the use of fabulous pots which creates a composition in space, color, and texture.

The grandeur of this home with its large hardscape surfaces lends itself to the unique collection of clay pots, ranging in sizes up to 42” tall. The installation of approximately 40 pots works well, being the thread to a consistent, aesthetic feature of structural groupings around the house. The pots are placed at the front entrance with 2 large urns flanking the stairs and also at the front door. The outdoor kitchen area is now a beautiful, fragrant room in the garden, with its extensive collection of plants. The large, raised, west-facing patio gains a much cooler feel with the scene created by the wide range of interesting pots and plants. The arrangements, which correspond to the hot tub area, add a soft element of privacy.

The plants used to create the variation in all of the pots were selected based on the exposures the different groupings faced. Some are in full shade; others unprotected form high winds and direct full sun. A wide variety of annual flowers are used for continuous color of flower and leaves as well as different structural habits, such as long hanging vines, wispy, delicate branching, and the bold collections of color that the many species provide. Many of the centerpiece plants are not as commonly used in this style of pot design, such as boxwood and mugo pine, as well as tropical plants that create a lush look with their large leaves and unique flower shapes. Some of the other imaginative plants choices are ornamental grasses,

hydrangea, and flowering vines, which can be found in other parts of the more extensive garden.

Upgrading plant choices, which cover this large property, are chosen for their ability to flourish in this hot, sunny, desert environment.  Freshening garden mulches seasonally defines crisp bed lines and creates an appealing ground plane.  Pruning to keep the trees, shrubs and large perennials vigorous, allows for the landscape to proliferate year to year.

Many difficult grade transitions demand complex watering needs and an elaborate drainage system which protects the home.  The intricate water feature requires continuous management to keep the purity of the crystal clear mountain water.  The homeowner's commitment to maintaining a natural scenic environment compliments the mountainous backdrop.
