Moving from the seclusion of Nederland to the base of the foothills of beautiful Boulder, these homeowners chose to take their landscaping to another level. Their key motivations were to give their children an exciting place to play that reflects the mountain setting from which they came and to bind their living spaces intimately to nature.
Their beautifully crafted urban home flanks the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks area, giving the relatively small property a very open feeling. The homeowner’s choice to utilize substantial boulder outcroppings to transition into the Open Space gave Outdoor Craftsmen the ability to create a very natural and striking aesthetic. Large pockets between boulders were left in construction to create areas of planting. Terraced into the slope is a vegetable garden and cutting garden along with many native and xeric trees and shrubs.
A natural cliff climbing wall was erected out of a 12’ sheer, single stone which has become an important focal point of this setting. Into the native slope, Outdoor Craftsmen incorporated a cave formation constructed out of large boulders to give the children a feeling of innate mystery.
Large boulders were integrated into the elegant front stairway system and along both sides of the house to contend with slight grade changes and shield direct views into the house. A sweeping turf area arcs along the front and rear garden regions interconnected by flagstone pathways keeping the flow of the property simple.
